Celebrating 30 Years of Service to the Community
In the fall of 1982, a small group of dedicated volunteers joined together to establish an emergency food pantry that could better serve the needs of the hungry in the fast-growing communities in Northern Rutherford county.

This year, the Smyrna-LaVergne Food Bank celebrates 30 years of helping our neighbors in need. We're proud of the service we provide to our neighbors here in Smyrna and LaVergne, and are thankful to be part of such a caring and generous community.

Throughout 2012, we'll be posting stories from our 30 year history. If you've used the food bank or have volunteered with us, we'd love to hear your story! Email your story to 30years@smyrnafoodbank.org.

We remain committed to eliminating hunger in our community and will continue our work until that happens. If you need help, please visit our Getting Help page or call our offices to learn how we can help.

Nissan Employees Hold Food Drive, Get Big Results!
Employees at Nissan North America's Smyrna facility held a food drive last month on behalf of the Food Bank. They collected 6000 pounds of food, and then delivered it to our warehouse!

We are so grateful for the support from local businesses such as Nissan. Their donation will help stretch our food supplies during what is typically a slow period of donations for the Food Bank.

A big thank you all the Nissan employees who helped make this amazing donation possible!

If your business or organization would like to hold a food drive to benefit the Smyrna-LaVergne Food Bank, please call or email our office for information to help you get started.

Pinnacle Bank Employees Tackle Much Needed Spring Cleaning Chores
Several employees from Pinnacle Bank put in some sweat equity at the Food Bank on March 30 as part of the United Way Days of Action event. Plant An Extra Row For the Food Bank This Growing Season
Calling all gardeners! Plant one extra row this year and donate your surplus produce to the Food Bank. Your donation of fresh produce will be given to hungry families right here in our community.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure what to plant?
Because produce is perishable and our refrigerator space is limited, foods that are shelf-stable are always appreciated. Here are some recommendations:
  • Corn
  • Collard Greens
  • Cucumbers
  • Green Beans
  • Onions
  • Peppers
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes (slightly under-ripe)
  • Zucchini

Regardless of what you plant or how much you have to give, the Food Bank is always in need of fruits and veggies, so don't hesitate to bring it by our office.

Need tips on gardening? Lots of information is available on the Web, including Veggie Gardening Tips and Weekend Gardner.

United Way Days of Action to Benefit the Food Bank
The United Way of Rutherford and Canon Counties will be holding their Days of Action March 29-31, 2012. This annual service event benefits local schools and non-profits by providing teams of volunteers from business, civic organizations and schools who perform projects ranging from painting, to landscaping, to delivering meals.

As a Partner Agency of the UW, the Smyrna-LaVergne Food Bank has been a grateful recipient of these helping hands. Last year, volunteers from Pinnacle Bank worked in our warehouse doing a variety of projects including sorting and stocking food donations, and unloading pallets of food. This year, we're looking for help with some much needed spring cleaning!

This is a great way to get involved and support the community. Visit the United Way's website to register your organization's team of volunteers. To select the Food Bank for your project, be sure to enter Project Code 18. Hurry, registration ends March 1.
